What Is Selank?

Selank is a synthetic seven-amino-acid peptide with the sequence:

Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro

It was developed from research involving tuftsin, a naturally occurring immune-related peptide.

Tuftsin itself consists of:

Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg

Selank extends that sequence by adding:

Pro-Gly-Pro

This created a peptide researchers became interested in not only for immune biology, but particularly for:

anxiety + stress + neurotransmission + cognition + neuroimmune signaling.

Unlike many compounds in the research-peptide market, Selank does have published human clinical research.

But the clinical literature is still small, much of it comes from Russian research groups, and it has not undergone the kind of large multinational development program required for FDA approval in the United States.

Why Are Researchers Interested in Selank?

Selank became best known as an experimental:

anxiolytic

meaning a compound studied for its ability to reduce anxiety.

Researchers have compared it with benzodiazepine medications and have investigated possible effects involving:

One human study included 62 patients with generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia.

Thirty received Selank and 32 received the benzodiazepine medazepam.

Researchers reported similar anxiolytic effects between the two groups, while Selank also showed antiasthenic and psychostimulant effects. 

That is a legitimate human clinical signal.

It is also nowhere near enough by itself to establish Selank as equivalent to an FDA-approved anxiety medication.

How Might Selank Work?

There probably isn’t one single mechanism.

Research suggests Selank can influence several interconnected systems.

The most commonly discussed include:

GABA signaling + enkephalin metabolism + neurotransmitter-related gene expression + neuroimmune signaling.

This is important because the internet often simplifies Selank into:

“a peptide version of a benzodiazepine.”

That’s not really accurate.

Selank appears to interact with some of the same broad inhibitory brain systems, but it is chemically and pharmacologically very different.

What About GABA?

This is probably Selank’s most important mechanistic research area.

GABA stands for:

gamma-aminobutyric acid

and is the major inhibitory neurotransmitter in the adult brain.

In simplified terms, GABA helps prevent neural activity from becoming excessively excitable.

Benzodiazepines such as diazepam and alprazolam enhance signaling through GABA-A receptors.

Selank appears to affect the GABAergic system too—but not necessarily by acting like a classic benzodiazepine.

A rat study examined expression of 84 genes involved in neurotransmission after Selank administration.

Researchers found widespread changes in neurotransmission-related gene expression and concluded that one possible mechanism involves allosteric modulation of the GABAergic system

Another laboratory study using human neuroblastoma cells found that Selank did not simply increase or decrease GABA-related genes on its own. Instead, it appeared to modify how cells responded to GABA and olanzapine, again suggesting more complicated modulation of GABA signaling. 

So the most accurate description is:

Selank appears to modulate GABA-related signaling rather than functioning as a straightforward GABA agonist.

Does Selank Work Like Xanax?

Not exactly.

This comparison shows up constantly because both are associated with anxiety reduction.

But:

Xanax/alprazolam → benzodiazepine → directly enhances GABA-A receptor activity

while:

Selank → peptide → appears to influence GABAergic signaling through more complex mechanisms.

The clinical literature also doesn’t establish Selank as an equivalent replacement for alprazolam, diazepam, lorazepam, or other benzodiazepines.

Researchers have compared Selank with benzodiazepines, but those studies were relatively small.

So:

benzodiazepine comparison → legitimate research context

“natural Xanax without side effects” → unsupported marketing language.

What About Generalized Anxiety?

This is probably the strongest human research area for Selank.

The 62-patient study involving generalized anxiety disorder and neurasthenia found anxiolytic effects similar to medazepam. 

Other Russian clinical work has also reported anxiolytic effects in anxiety-related conditions.

That means Selank has considerably more clinical evidence than compounds whose entire reputation comes from animal studies.

But there are important limitations:

  • Small studies
  • Limited replication
  • Concentrated geographic research base
  • Limited independent validation
  • Little modern large-scale randomized evidence
  • No U.S. approval

So it is fair to say:

Selank has preliminary human evidence for anxiety.

It is not fair to say:

Selank is a clinically established treatment for anxiety disorders worldwide.

What About Panic Attacks?

People frequently search for Selank in relation to:

panic attacks + panic disorder + acute anxiety.

The scientific evidence is much thinner.

Selank does have neurological and cognitive research.

But controlled human trials have not established it as a treatment for:

“Brain fog” is a broad description rather than a medical diagnosis.

Selank is sometimes advertised as:

“an anxiety peptide with no tolerance, dependence, or withdrawal.”

It has not demonstrated the classic dependence profile associated with benzodiazepines in the limited research available.

But absence of evidence isn’t the same as proving:

zero dependence risk + zero withdrawal risk + zero tolerance risk.

Large long-term human studies would be needed to establish that confidently.

What About Safety?

Published human studies provide some exposure experience with Selank.

But the overall human safety database remains relatively small.

FDA currently lists selank acetate (TP-7) among bulk substances that may present significant safety risks when used in compounding. FDA specifically notes possible immunogenicity related to aggregation and peptide impurities and says it lacks important information about safety issues from human administration. 

That doesn’t mean FDA has proven Selank to be dangerously toxic.

It means FDA considers the available safety and product-characterization information inadequate for compounded use.
